June Brings Expo ’74 Conversations, Gardening, Hiking, Creative Activities & More

During Expo ’74: 50 Years of Environmental Awareness, community conversations are led by the League of Women Voters Spokane Area and provide the space to talk about how individuals, neighborhoods, and municipalities can take action to prepare for the impacts of the climate crisis. You can also learn more about different climate topics with the books in this climate list compiled by the League of Women Voters Spokane Area.

Gardening workshops in June are flourishing with six different topics and a plant clinic:

• Fire-Resistant Landscaping for Wildfire Preparedness
• Growing Small Fruits
• Gardening with a Flexible Plan
• Vertebrate Wildlife Management for Your Garden
• Techniques for Spokane Xeriscaping
• Lawn Care
• WSU Extension Master Gardeners Plant Clinic

Creative programs for adults include 3D Printing: Travel Sundial, Create a Watercolor Landmark Accordion Book, Spinning Yarn, and Introduction to Bollywood (all ages). Educational and informative workshops include Medicare topics, Dementia Friends sessions, Tuesday Memory Cafés, A Matter of Balance: Preventing Falls, and Homebuyer Education Seminars.

Take a hike or two led by naturalist writers and attend informational sessions during June:

• Nature Journaling Hike: Glenrose Trail, led by Heidi Lasher of Out There Outdoors magazine
• Hiking Safely Near Bears, a presentation by Matt Brinkman, wildlife biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
• Wildfire in the Hills: Iller Creek History Presentation & Hike, led by Jack Nisbet, naturalist and published author

SCLD Online Authors Series brings you great online discussions in June:

• Author Talk with Smithsonian Curator Matt Shindell about his book For the Love of Mars: A Human History of the Red Planet
• Author Talk with Freida McFadden, the queen of twists, about her bestselling series The Housemaid (third installment arriving June 11, 2024)
• Author Talk with Tiffany Jewell, discussing systemic racism and her new book Everything I Learned About Racism I Learned in School

Small business owners and entrepreneurs can learn how to Leverage Your Social Media for Consistent Conversions in a free, online workshop presented by a SCORE Spokane business mentor. Get answers to your questions about starting or expanding your business during Drop-in Business Mentoring at Deer Park Library.

If you’re looking for engaging activities for kids and teens, our Summer Reading programs kick off on June 17. Explore this summer’s theme, Adventure Begins at Your Library, within the pages of Engage, available at all SCLD libraries and online.
